South of the border
Yesterday, I returned from a two week holiday in "Mexico" (Melbourne, that is, since it's "south of the border"!) and had a fantastic time eating my way through it, as well as getting a nice tan! Where food is concerned, I kid you not - the food down there is fantastic, and the shopping almost as good! Here's a list of the food we ate and the recommendations!!!!
Vietnamese pho in Footscray;
then at the Queen Vic Markets, theres:
American doughnuts
Wedding Sausage from the deli
Pastrami
the pepper cheese
smoked salmon roll
Oh, and did I mention the American doughnuts?? =)
San Churro on Brunswick St and all their chocolate! Mmmmmm.
Also on Brunswick St, there's Joe's Garage, a very nice place for cafe food.
We spent a couple of nights in Port Fairy when we did the Great Ocean Road and stayed at the very quaint and country-like B & B "Clonmara" (thanks Vron for the name!)so whilst there, we were recommended a restaurant to eat at - Portofino on Bank. It was truly the nicest restaurant and complete overall dining experience on the planet, and this is no exaggeration - their lamb dish is the nicest lamb I've ever had in my whole entire life and their creme brulee was gorgeous. In fact, if that restaurant was in Melbourne or Sydney itself, instead of in the out of the way town of Port Fairy, you wouldn't be able to book in to eat there for at least a month! Simon and Karen took us to a gorgeous restaurant called "Donovan's" in St. Kilda which was right on the beach, but Portofino's beat it hands down! In fact, if Portofino on Bank was situated next door to Donovan's I know which one I'd prefer to dine at!
Then there's "The Salty Dog" in Lorne for the best fish and chips, and the nicest pumpkin fritters and the gelato place right next door for the scrummiest gelato ever!
The best seafood we had was the seafood platter at the Marine Hotel in Brighton. Not bad when we had $25 deducted too (thanks to a wonderful thing in the form of the Entertainment Book! YAY!) and shared between 3 people instead of 2 (it was massive and there was no way 2 people could've finished it!)
In Williamstown, there's Briezoz for French crepes. Yum!
In Sorrento, on the Mornington Peninsula, there's the world famous (apparently) vanilla slices. YUM.
Along with the food, of course was some nice sightseeing! So here are some pics!
